Overtime Rules Affecting Most State Workers to Change Automatically

LITTLE ROCK, AR - New federal overtime pay rules affecting most Arkansas workers will go into effect automatically this summer without state action.

Some states already have their own laws and the new regulations will not apply.  Other states have laws that cite current federal regulations, but do not have the mechanisms to automatically update for a new language.  Their legislatures will have to act to implement the new regulations.

In Arkansas, there is no link between the state and federal laws.  Workers are covered either by federal regulations or by the state rules, which typically cover mostly businesses grossing less than $500,000 in annual sales, Labor Department chief counsel Denise Oxley said.

The rules will not automatically change for state businesses covered by state law.
