White County Officials Want to Raze Motel, Put Up New Jail

APRIL 26, 2004 - Posted at 7:23 a.m. CDT

SEARCY, AR - White County officials say they want to raze a motel and build a new county jail at a site near U.S. 67-167.  They're asking city planners at Searcy for permission to use the property for a jail.

Earlier this year, the Searcy Planning Commission and the City Council declined to change the zoning of another parcel where the county wanted to put a new jail.  That site was in an industrial area.

County Judge Bob Parish, the county's chief executive officer, obtained an option on the motel property ten days ago.  The option allows the county to but about 21 acres, provided the city approves, there are no environmental problems, and the Quorum Court provides the money.  The price is $39,500.
