GCT band directors retiring after 36 years

PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) - The Greene County Tech Spring Appreciation Concert held Sunday afternoon at the GCT auditorium was bittersweet for the schools' fine arts program.

Directors Danny and Linda Davis are retiring after 36 years of teaching.

After teaching at GCT the last 25 years of their 36-year careers in music and theater education, Danny and Linda Davis decided they want to spend more time with family and friends.

Danny Davis taught in Lepanto, western Arkansas and Alabama before settling in as band director at GCT.

Linda is the band's flagline director, and has been the GCT theater director for the past 25 years.

The Davises said they do not know where the time has gone, but are glad they are ending on a good note. "There's so many activities coming up in the next two weeks before school's out that I really haven't had a chance to sit down and think about it," Danny said.

"They were selected as the grand champs when we competed in Florida. They won sweepstakes this year. My flagline won everything possible. Our final production of "Oklahoma" was on the stage a couple of weeks ago. It was just an amazing production, so if you're going to go out, go out on a winning note, and I feel like that's what we've done. We've just had some amazing students," Linda said.

Danny and Linda's former student and daughter Kara said her parents inspired her to become a band director.

"I saw what he did and what my mom did with this program, and I just thought, ‘There's no way I can live up to that, ever,' and then when it came time to really decide, I knew that there was nothing else that I could do but be a band director and show students like he does everyday that he loves them and he wants them to do their best," she said.

Tanner Williams was a student of Danny Davis' from sixth grade until he graduated from GCT in 2011. "He's strict because he knows the potential that you have. He's going to get the best out of you no matter what it takes."

The last career performance is Friday, May 18 at the Greene County Tech graduation at the Arkansas State University Convocation Center.

The last day of school for Greene County Tech is May 23.
