THAYER, MO - Funeral services are set for this afternoon for a Region 8 soldier who was killed in action while serving his country in Iraq last week.

30-year-old Kenneth Melton of Batesville died last Sunday in a bomb explosion.  Melton was a specialist with the Arkansas Army National Guard's 39th Infantry Brigade.  He most recently lived in the Batesvile area, but grew up in the Thayer (MO)-Mammoth Spring state line area, graduating from Thayer High School in 1992.  His funeral will be held at the Clary Funeral Home in Mammoth Spring.

Funeral Director Tom Clary says Melton's memorial service will be a civilian service, but burial at the Jeff Cemetery near Thayer will feature full military honors, including an honor guard from Fort Seal, Oklahoma.  First District Congressman Marion Berry is also expected to attend the services.

Governor Huckabee has also ordered that state flags be flown at half-staff today in Melton's honor.
