High school students encourage healthy living

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)-A group of Region 8 high school students are working to get the next generation in shape.

Brookland High School students put together a healthy lifestyle fair for the 5th and 6th grade students.

All day long, students rotated in and out of a variety of stations focusing on different areas of health.

East Facilitator for Brookland High School, Cindy Whitaker, says they wanted to touch on a little bit of everything.

"The students designed booths," Whitaker said. "They came up with topics to put together to teach the kids all about healthy living. The topics at the stations ranged from lungs, skin, teeth and exercise."

Whitaker says students chose the healthy lifestyle fair because they wanted to try and help solve a current issue.

"We were thinking about topics for today," Whitaker said. "Childhood obesity and things that we could do to maybe help out with that. So, we wanted to teach the kids some fun ways to exercise and some things they could do with their parents and we put together some things they could take home."

Sophomore student Kalista Holloway was one of the students who put the program together.

Holloway says she's proud to have been a part of this event.

"I think it's great," Holloway said. "I love helping others and I think in the long run it's going to help them and just teach them a little bit about how to be healthier and how to live healthier."

Whitaker says the high school students learned a lot from this process.

"The high school students benefited from this experience," Whitaker said. "Working with the little kids and providing things for them. They also learned responsibility by being in charge of putting this together."

And a lot went into putting the event together.

Students designed ten different, active stations for the middle school students to go through.

"Students created a work out video they did with the middle school gifted and talented students," Whitaker said. "They also have augmented reality that shows the students what a heart looks like and how it pumps. It's about overall healthy living. To teach them about how to take care of your skin and use sun screen. About germs, how to take care of your teeth and even recipes. They've made some healthy recipes and they're providing the kids with a little healthy snack."

300 fifth and sixth grade students went through the stations at the healthy lifestyle fair.
