Police Say Bootheel Cop Claiming To Have Been Shot Made Story Up

MAY 3, 2004 - Posted at 11:17 a.m. CDT

HAYTI HEIGHTS, MO - A Missouri Bootheel police officer who told authorities he had been shot by an unknown gunman is accused of making it up.

Hayti Heights officer Chris McNail was charged Friday with making a false police report, a misdemeanor.

Shortly after 5 p.m. on April 25, McNail radioed that he had been shot.  He was treated at a hospital and released.

McNail told investigators he was checking on water over a road when he heard distant shots.  He said two bullets struck the back of his bulletproof vest.

An investigation by Missouri State Highway Patrol and Pemiscot County authorities determined that McNail allegedly had taken off his shirt and bulletproof vest and shot them himself with his back-up weapon.

McNail is suspended.  No decision yet on whether he will be fired.
