Japanese Company Reported to Be Eyeing Marion Site

MAY 4, 2004 - Posted at 7:12 a.m. CDT, updated at 12:21 p.m.

LITTLE ROCK, AR - A newspaper is reporting that a Japanese company is preparing to announce it will build a truck parts plant at Marion in east Arkansas.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in a copyright story cites an unnamed state official who said Hino Motors of Tokyo plans to build the plant.  The site at Marion was offered to Toyota Motor Corporation for a truck plant that last year went to San Antonio.

Documents filed with the local government show applications have been made to change the zoning for a site next to the land that had been proposed for the Toyota plant.

This morning, Governor Huckabee refused to comment on the prospect of another parts plant headed to east Arkansas.

If the Hino plant is announced, it would be the fourth auto parts plant to choose the region in the past ten months.

An auto industry analyst told the newspaper that the development could signal that an auto assembly plant could be in the works for the area.
