Bosch Power Tools to Close Walnut Ridge Plant

MAY 4, 2004 - Posted at 12:32 p.m. CDT, updated at 2:00 p.m.

WALNUT RIDGE, AR - Lawrence County is about to lose its largest employer.

Officials with the Robert Bosch Power Tool Corporation confirmed, for K8 News this afternoon,  the company plans to close its S&B Power Tools plant in Walnut Ridge.

Plant officials broke the news to employees this morning.  A statement released by the company this afternoon says "the main building facility" will close "by the middle of next year."  The company anticipates the facility will be completely closed by mid-2005.  A Bosch spokeswoman cited "cost pressures from the world market for power tools" as the reason for the closure.

Bosch currently employs 291 associates in Walnut Ridge.  The plant opened the Walnut Ridge facility in 1973.  At its peak production point in 1980, the plant employed approximately 1,200 workers.

The company's National Reconditioning Center, which employs 54 people, will remain open.  The reconditioning center is a facility that re-conditions faulty or slightly used power tools manufactured by the company.
