JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – Officers with the Jonesboro Police Department are heading out of state and biking their way back.
Police officers loaded up bikes Thursday at Union and Monroe Streets bound for Louisiana. The officers will stop peddling at their final destination in Cardwell, Missouri. The 330 mile bike trip is to raise money and awareness for the D.A.R.E. program.
The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program helps bring attention to alcohol, tobacco and peer pressure in schools. Police officers also say it helps build self-esteem in students.
This is the 22nd year for the D.A.R.E. program at the Jonesboro Police Department. About 1,100 fifth graders have participated in the program this year.
According to Cpl. Kevin Foust with JPD, $18,000 has been raised so far for D.A.R.E.
