Prison Guards Must Now Prove Physical Fitness

LITTLE ROCK, AR - This summer, veteran prison guards at the state's prisons will have to prove they are physically fit.

Fitness tests have been administered to new security employees since 2002, but those hired before that year at the state's 18 prisons were given two years to prepare for the tests.

Beginning July 1, the tests will be given over a two-year period and will affect about 1,000 correction officers and food-production managers.

The state prison department says guards who fail the tests will be re-assigned to other jobs within the system.
