Jurors Convict Stuttgart Teen of Manslaughter in Slaying of ASU Professor

MAY 10, 2004 - Posted at 2:55 p.m. CDT

STUTTGART, AR - Jurors convicted a Stuttgart teenager of manslaughter today in the 2001 killing of an Arkansas State University professor.  Kirk Otis was 14 when professor Barney Smith was shot and killed during a robbery.  Smith, 49, was sitting on the front porch of his mother's home when prosecutors said Otis walked past and shot him.

The manslaughter conviction carries a prison sentence of between three and ten years.  Otis was charged with capital murder and could have faced life in prison.  A judge barred prosecutors from seeking the death penalty against Otis but allowed them to try him as an adult.
