JHS alum Austin Cook named 1st team Capital One Academic All-District VI

FAYETTEVILLE (ArkansasRazorbacks.com) - Junior Austin Cook of the No. 11 University of Arkansas men's golf team was named first-team Capital One Academic All-District VI it was announced late last week.

The 2012 SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year carries a 3.83 grade point average in biology and recently finished tied for 30th, individually, at the NCAA Bowling Green Regional.  Cook's inclusion in the at-large first team moves his name to the Academic All-America ballot where first-team members from each of the eight national districts will be voted on for Academic All-America honors.

"Austin is a great student and golfer," Arkansas Head Coach Brad McMakin said.  "To be able to compete at the level that he does and maintain such a high grade point average in a difficult major tells you a lot about Austin's character."

Cook completed his junior season with a career best stroke average of 73.21 and three top five finishes.  He helped Arkansas win a school record seven tournaments this season and his scores counted in 25 of Arkansas' 33 rounds played.  As a sophomore, the Jonesboro, Ark., native earned honorable mention Ping! All-America honors after he placed 10th at the NCAA Championships and he is a multi-time member of the both the SEC and University of Arkansas athletic department honor rolls.

In order to be considered for Capital One Academic All-District honors, student-athletes must be a sophomore or older and maintain a minimum 3.3 grade point average.  Arkansas is a part of district VI along with schools from Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
