Fun activities preview the return of PortFest

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) – Flooding forced the cancellation ofPortFest last year, so organizers expect big crowds when the festivalreturns  next weekend.

Some of the fun, however, actually begins bright and earlySaturday, May 26. Local kids can visit Newport Lake, next to the downtownfarmers market pavilion, to participate in a free fishing derby.

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., and the fishing commencesat 8 a.m.

People can also walk or run in the PortFest 5K on Saturday, whichwill be held at 8 a.m. behind Walton Hall at the Arkansas State Universitycampus in Newport.

Julie Allen with the Newport Area Chamber of Commerce saysthese events ring in the 30th anniversary of PortFest.

"It has become a tradition for folks in the region to bringtheir families every year," Allen said. "It's like a family reunion seeing allyour friends and just enjoying the White River. There's an extra buzz this yearbecause we didn't have it last year."
