Fun activities preview the return of PortFest

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) – Flooding forced the cancellation of PortFest last year, so organizers expect big crowds when the festival returns  next weekend.

Some of the fun, however, actually begins bright and early Saturday, May 26. Local kids can visit Newport Lake, next to the downtown farmers market pavilion, to participate in a free fishing derby.

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., and the fishing commences at 8 a.m.

People can also walk or run in the PortFest 5K on Saturday, which will be held at 8 a.m. behind Walton Hall at the Arkansas State University campus in Newport.

Julie Allen with the Newport Area Chamber of Commerce says these events ring in the 30th anniversary of PortFest.

"It has become a tradition for folks in the region to bring their families every year," Allen said. "It's like a family reunion seeing all your friends and just enjoying the White River. There's an extra buzz this year because we didn't have it last year."

The main PortFest festivities run from June 1 to June 2. To check out the schedule of events and to find out more information, click here.
