JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Horse riders from all over Arkansas and other states convened upon the ASU Equine Center Monday for barrel races.
The United Country Barrel Race benefitting the March of Dimes held it's 2nd annual event.
The gates opened at 10 a.m. and the races started later on in the afternoon. The day's events included peewee barrels, pony, youth and open events, as well as pole events and speed events.
March of Dimes Division Director for Northeast Arkansas, Melissa Gann said the benefit gets better every year.
"We are actually expecting a bigger turnout. We're hoping the event's going to be bigger and better every year. We want to do this every year and grow it. Our goal this year is five thousand dollars so we're really hoping to grow it quite a bit from last year,"
The barrel race raised $3,000 last year. Angie Gallaher with United Country said without help from some of their primary sponsors, their turnout wouldn't have been so great.
Primary sponsors for the race include Gilliam Truck Sales, First Community Bank Mortgage, CiCi's Pizza and Nationwide Insurance.
The March of Dimes works to help babies become healthy and full-term during pregnancy.
