Five Razorbacks taken on final day of MLB Draft

FAYETTEVILLE (ArkansasRazorbacks.com) – The University of Arkansas baseball team had five players selected on the final day of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, held on Wednesday.

Senior shortstop Tim Carver was the first Razorback to be selected on Wednesday as he was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 19th round (608th overall). Senior outfielder Sam Bates was selected in the 28th round (853rd overall) by the Kansas City Royals, while junior left-handed pitcher Randall Fant was picked in the 29th round (893rd overall) by the Cleveland Indians. Junior outfielder/right-handed pitcher Derrick Bleeker went in the 37th round (1122nd overall) to the Baltimore Orioles, while redshirt sophomore outfielder Jacob Morris was also selected in the 37th round (1133rd overall) by the Cleveland Indians.

With the five Razorbacks taken on day three of the draft, a total of eight Arkansas players were selected during the 2012 MLB Draft. Matt Reynolds (New York, 2nd round), Nolan Sanburn (Oakland, 2nd round) and DJ Baxendale (Minnesota, 10th round) were drafted on the second day of the MLB Draft.

A native of Fayetteville, Carver has started all but one game this season for the Razorbacks. He ranks second on the team with a .307 batting average to go along with two homers and 30 RBI. One of 25 players on the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award watch list, Carver is tied for the team lead with 73 hits and is second on the team with 14 doubles. Carver is second on the team with 14 stolen bases. He has 19 multiple-hit games this season, which is the second most on the team.

Carver has played in 212 games in his collegiate career, with 197 starts, and is a .267 hitter with seven homers and 89 RBI. He's five hits away from 200 in his college career and has stolen 48 bases as a Razorback.

A native of Cabot, Ark., Bates has played in 44 games this season and made 37 starting appearances. Bates is hitting .244 with six homers and 25 RBI. He ranks tied for second on the team in homers. Bates has eight multi-hit games on the season and five multi-RBI performances.

In his two seasons as a Razorback, Bates has played in 69 games, including 56 starts, and is hitting .242 with six homers and 32 RBI.

Hailing from Texarkana, Texas, Fant has pitched in 13 games, including 12 starts, and has a 2-2 record with a 3.26 ERA. In 47 innings of work, Fant has given up 18 runs, 17 earned, and struck out 34 batters, while issuing just eight walks. Fant started the Houston Regional final against Sam Houston State and threw well, tossing 4.1 scoreless innings.

Fant has pitched in 43 games as a Razorback and has made 33 starts. The left hander has an 8-9 career record with a 3.81 ERA. He's thrown 151.1 innings in his collegiate career, striking out 94 batters and holding opposing hitters to a .261 batting average.

Bleeker has played in 56 games, including 37 starts, in his junior season and is hitting .262 with six homers and 23 RBI. The Longmont, Colo., native is tied for second on the team with six homers and ranks second on the team with a .490 slugging percentage. Bleeker has 13 multi-hit games on the season and has recorded six multi-RBI games.

Bleeker has played in 68 games as a Razorback and made 39 starts. Bleeker has a career batting average of .262 with seven homers and 26 RBI.

Morris played in 52 games and made 49 starts as the everyday centerfielder for the Razorbacks. The Coppell, Texas, product hit .236 on the season with three round trippers and 23 RBI. Morris had nine multi-hit games on the season.

Morris has played in 75 games, including 67 starts, in his first two years at Arkansas. The outfielder has a .222 batting average with three homers and 28 RBI.
