Missouri's Sex Offenders Now on the Web

MAY 20, 2004 - Posted at 7:48 a.m. CDT

JEFFERSON CITY, MO - A new Website listing the state's registered sex offenders is so popular that many Internet users have been unable to make it work.

The Highway Patrol opened the site on Tuesday.

And by yesterday, many people were unable to search the electronic files for sex offenders in their home areas.

Patrol spokesman Lieutenant Tim Hull says the computer equipment isn't able to handle hundreds of thousands of searches at one time.

But the problem could be solved before too much longer.  The Legislature's budget for the fiscal year starting July 1 has more than $600 thousand for the patrol to buy equipment and operate the Website.
