TRUMANN, AR (KAIT) –The Trumann Police Department lost a police officer last year, but welcomed a new one to force donated by Bluestreak K9.
Officer Blue, a 2-year-old sporting dog, will now serve as a drug fighting K9 and was named by the family of Officer Jonathan Schmidt, who was killed in the line of duty.
"They lost a police officer. There's no replacement of a fallen officer, but it can definitely help with the family and with the police department to have something to look at and, you know, this is in memory of him [officer Jonathan Schmidt], you know," explained Blake Bristow with Bluestreak K9.
Blue was a rescue from the Jonesboro Animal Control Office and is fully trained in handling narcotics detection.
"Come across her and she showed a really high ball drive, so I used that to train her for narcotics detection dog," Bristow added.
Bristow says Blue will take another training course this Saturday, and she'll start working with a Trumann police officer full time starting next week.
