CALICO ROCK, AR - An official of Ozark Iron Works at Calico Rock says the company will close down around July 15, idling about 75 workers. Pete Landrum, administrator of the plant, said the company lost business to a manufacturer in China.
He said the company in China was paying its workers 66 cents an hour, while Ozark Iron Works was paying its workers $8 to $9 an hour.
Landrum said the Arkansas Governors Dislocated Worker Task Force has asked the Department of Labor to review the circumstances of Ozark Iron Works closure. If the case qualifies, Ozark Iron Works workers could get their employment benefits extended up to two years while they are retrained for other work, at government expense.
