Group still selling fireworks despite city burn ban

CARDWELL, MO (KAIT) – The burn ban in one Region 8 city is not stopping the sale of fireworks in preparation for Fourth of July.

Cardwell mayor John Prince enacted a burn ban June 26.  Because the Future Farmers of America program at Southland High School hosts an annual fireworks sale fundraiser, the city will allow people to shoot fireworks at the City Baseball Park for several days during the Fourth of July week.

"Last year we raised over $2000, and that helped us so much," said Southland High School junior and FFA president Madison Kellums.

People will be permitted to shoot fireworks 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. July 1-3, and 2 p.m. to 12 a.m. July 4.

"(We can) keep the FFA boys where they'd be able to sell their fireworks and make money, and at the same time, safety first, and the fire department can take care of one spot over here better than they can over town," said Police and Fire Chief Anthony Parker.

"I just think we live in such a great community where they support us enough to let us still have our fundraiser because this is our main fundraiser," Kellums said.

In addition to the firework sales fundraiser, the Southland FFA is taking orders for barbeque through July 2.

FFA parents will be preparing the barbeque.
