Ash Flat moves ahead with new fire department plans

ASH FLAT, AR (KAIT) – The city of Ash Flat is finally moving ahead with its new fire department.

Mayor Danny Traw said construction will begin as soon as possible and will be finished late this fall. The new building will be built off Goodwin Cove behind Sonic off Highway 62.

The city council passed an ordinance saying the $635,000 bond will be paid back over 20 years.

Finding a location hasn't been easy for the fire department. It has looked at several properties in the past year, including a building owned by Terry Dillard and a lot off of Highway 63.

Costs of moving and rebuilding have also become an obstacle for the Ash Flat Fire Department to overcome, as they have had to turn down previous bids that were too high.

The fire department had to temporarily set up shop in a building designated for the city library and a pole barn.
