Sheriff warning residents of possible magazine sales scam

MOUNTAIN HOME, AR (KAIT) – The Baxter County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a possible magazine sale scam.

According to Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery, the sheriff's office took a complaint report that a man came to the door of a private residence in Mountain Home. The man told the residents that he was selling magazine subscriptions on behalf of the Mountain Home Schools' German American Partnership Program (GAPP).

Montgomery says the residents bought the subscription, but after making inquiries about the legitimacy of the salesman and his product, the residents stopped payments on the checks they had issued.

A Mountain Home Police Department school resource officer told the sheriff's office that the local GAPP program was not going door to door selling magazines or any other items. The officer also said the local program representatives didn't contract with or agree for other persons or organizations to do so on their behalf.

Sheriff Montgomery says his department is warning Baxter County residents to look out for potential fraudulent magazine sales scams in their neighborhoods. He says people should not purchase magazines or conduct business with magazine salespersons unless they are able to verify the legitimacy of the sale.

Montgomery also advises residents to contact their local law enforcement agency to help verify the legitimacy of the salesperson and their organization.
