Pope shocked by Colorado theater shootings

Pope Benedict says he's "deeply shocked" by the "senseless violence" in the Colorado movie theater shootings and is praying that God will give comfort and strength to the survivors and relatives of the victims.

In his traditional Sunday blessing, Benedict said he shared the distress of the families and friends of the victims.

The pope spoke from the papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, in the hills south of Rome.

Benedict also said he's praying that the London Olympics will promote world peace and friendship.

He said competitive spirit, physical fitness and personal achievement are "positive values" that the church has always emphasized.
