PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) - A Paragould man has been charged with manslaughter following a house fire that killed a young girl and sent another to a Little Rock hospital.

Prosecutors say on Friday, July 13, Jerry Edward Laroe was babysitting his girlfriend's two daughters, ages six and two, when fire broke out at their home in the 700-block of South 6th Street.

According to court records, Laroe was "under the influence of controlled substances" and caused the fire.

Firefighters were able to get both children out of the house alive; but the six year old died at a local hospital.  The two year old was taken to Children's Hospital in Little Rock in critical condition.

Laroe is charged with manslaughter and two felony counts of endangering the welfare of a minor.

He is being held in lieu of $150,000 bond.  According to police, the fire is still under investigation.
