SeMo Sheriff & Chief Deputy Charged With Stealing

JUNE 4, 2004 - Posted at 8:06 a.m. CDT

BLOOMFIELD, MO - The Stoddard County sheriff and chief deputy have been charged with stealing.

A special prosecutor found that Sheriff Steve Fish told Stoddard County he had sold a damaged Crown Victoria for about $130 this spring.

Court records indicate the county-owned car actually had been bought for $1,500, and Fish allegedly kept the rest of the money.

Deputy Rick Cook allegedly collected more than $1,000 of improper mileage reimbursement between 2001 and 2003.  He allegedly logged miles based on papers that other deputies served.  Records indicated he was reprimanded and already reimbursed the department.

Fish and Cook say they will be found innocent when all the evidence is presented.

Arraignment is set for July 8 in Bloomfield in southeastern Missouri.
