Arkansas State looking for new Director of Athletics

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Arkansas State University - Jonesboro Chancellor Tim Hudson announced Tuesday afternoon that he is looking for a new Director of Athletics.

Dr. Dean Lee is moving to fill the vacant University Advancement Division's associate vice chancellor position, effective immediately.

Hudson said in a statement that a search will begin immediately.  Senior Associate Director of Athletics Doug Abel will serve as the interim Athletic Director until the position is filled.
ASU system president Dr. Chuck Welch will lead the national search for a new director of athletics.
In a news release from the university, Dr. Hudson said, "we appreciate Dr. Lee's service to Arkansas State University in the role of Athletic Director. Under his tenure, ASU has enjoyed progressive changes in donations, academics, facilities and attendance. Given his background, he will be an asset to University Advancement in our quest for additional resources."
Welch stated he expected to move quickly to find a new head of athletics. "We will be looking for an individual who understands the business of athletics and is poised to further the momentum ASU is currently experiencing. We expect to attract high-caliber candidates who bring with them the leadership expertise to take ASU's athletic programs to the next level," said Welch.
During Dr. Lee's tenure, the university hired a number of successful coaches.
The biggest setback came in 2010 when the NCAA imposed several penalties on the athletic department for allowing 31 ineligible players to participate in games.
The university says Lee will receive the same salary he's been getting as athletic director, $150,123.
