Arkansas couple accused in great-grandson's death

SPRINGDALE, Ark. (AP) - The great-grandparents of a toddler who died after being left in a hot car in Springdale face misdemeanor negligent homicide charges.
Police Lt. Kevin Lewis says William Staten and Margette Staten are accused of leaving 2-year-old Joniah Chronister in a vehicle Aug. 3 while they went shopping at a Walmart. The National Weather Service reported a temperature that day of 102 degrees.
The couple posted bond of $25,000 each and were released from custody Friday.
Police responding to a 911 call found Joniah buckled in his car seat. He was pronounced dead at Northwest Medical Center. The Arkansas State Crime Lab determined the cause of death to be environmental hyperthermia, or a fatal heat stroke.
A telephone listing for the Statens couldn't be found Sunday.
