Look for Mexican Trucks Soon on Arkansas' Highways

JUNE 9, 2004 - Posted at 7:53 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Arkansas highway officials are expecting some changes when Mexican commercial trucks start trickling into the state.

This week the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that President Bush could lift a 22-year moratorium on Mexican trucks without an environmental impact study or intervention by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

But the border won't be open to trucks until an agreement is completed by the two governments.

The Washington-based Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, which represents state transportation departments, is trying to bring its numbers up to speed on how to handle truckers who may be unfamiliar with U.S. regulations or even the English language.

Mexican truckers will likely drive through Arkansas, which is considered a major freight gateway.
