Community groups prep area kids for school

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – A back-to-school giveaway was held this weekend to help out students and parents.

The event was held at the Parker Park Community Center in Jonesboro.

Many families enjoyed food, fun and received free school supplies.

The Stars of Zion #7, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Widow Sons #7 Masons organized this giveaway.

Deedra Metcalf, a member of the Stars of Zion, Deedra Metcalf, a member of the Stars of Zion, says the idea for the event started when members from these organizations thought about the low-income students.

"It's a hard thing when you try to focus in school when you don't have the supplies that you need or when you don't have the support that you need," Metcalf said, "and that's our job as Stars of Zion and the Widow Sons is to service this community and make sure they have what they need."

Metcalf added that the organizations feel like they have been very successful with this school supply drive, and they plan on making it an annual event.
