MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Students, coaches, and teachers returned to Millington Central High School Wednesday morning with heavy hearts.

Resource officers told Action News 5 several students passed out before classes even got started. At least three ambulances were called to the school.

This comes in response to the death of a popular Millington High football player Monday evening.

Dana Payne, 15, was injured during practice. He was rushed to LeBonheur Children's Hospital where he died.

Players, friends, faculty, and parents all made their way to the hospital where they learned he did not survive.

"I heard from my son. He rode home with him from practice every day," said Stacy Harris. "All I know it was an injury at practice."

Superintendent John Aitken left a school board meeting after getting word of the accident. He met with Payne's mother.

"Anytime you have a death in a tragic injury such as that, it's heartbreaking," Aitken said. "There are some heartbroken folks in there that are struggling to cope with this."

Counselors will be at Millington Central Wednesday to help students and faculty with the grieving process.

Football practice is canceled in Millington Wednesday night.

A memorial fund has been set up in Dana Payne's name.  Donations can be made at any First Tennessee Bank or First South Credit Union.
