Craighead County Authorities Investigating Weekend Death of Caraway Man

JUNE 13 - updated at 7:38 a.m. CDT June 14, updated at 5:09 p.m. CDT

JONESBORO - The Craighead County Sherrif's department is investigating an apparent weekend homicide.

The body of Dennis Coats was found Saturday morning around 11:30 in rural Craighead county off County Road 876, in the area known as the St. Francis Sunkenlands, southwest of Caraway.  The remains were found by two ATV riders.

The apparent cause of death was multiple stab wounds.  Craighead County Sheriff Jack McCann says his department is working around the clock on the case.  "We've worked on it all day Saturday, all day Sunday.  We've worked on it today," said McCann.  When asked if authorities had a suspect, McCann would not comment, but did say his officers are getting promising leads.  "I've had some people come to me this morning.  In the next hour, we'll get back on track."

Caraway Police Chief Jerry Vaughn knew Coats well, and is baffled by the event.  "He was just a hard-working country boy like we are.  We just never thought anything like this would happen close to Caraway," said Vaughn.

Coats was last seen alive at approximately 10:30 Friday evening near his home on Craighead County Road 837.

The victim is survived by three daughters, ages 9 to 16.
