Mississippi's Mackey ready to make impact at RB, faces UCA on Saturday

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Randall Mackey is at the top of Mississippi's running back depth chart.

First-year coach Hugh Freeze doesn't mind admitting that gives him a little extra joy, saying the 5-foot-11, 195-pound senior is "1 of my favorite kids on the team."

Mackey ascension is 1 of the feel-good stories during preseason camp as the Rebels prepare to face Central Arkansas on Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

He's made an impressive transformation from quarterback to running back during the offseason, and finally appears ready to make headlines for something other than mediocre performances and suspensions.

Freeze says he expects four running backs to get carries on Saturday, including Mackey, junior Jeff Scott and freshmen I'Tavius Mathers and Jaylen Walton.
