UALR's Edina Begic was named Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, while Louisiana-Monroe's Marcela Araya earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, the league office announced Monday.
Begic, a sophomore outside-hitter from Sarajevo, Bosnia, earned All-Tournament honors at the Memphis Invitational after helping the Trojans to a 2-1 record. She recorded a double-double in every match, finishing the weekend in style with 13 kills and only one error on 18 attempts (.429%) to go along with five assisted blocks against the host Tigers.
In UALR's win in a five-set thriller over Austin Peay, she tallied 25 kills and 17 digs for the double dip. Begic also had 12 digs against Eastern Michigan and Memphis. Defensively, she had 50 receptions and only one error all weekend (.980%).
Araya, a sophomore libero from San Jose, Costa Rica, registered a 7.5 digs per set average in the 12 sets over the weekend at the Mississippi State Maroon Classic. She led all players with 30 digs against Kennesaw State, and then topped it with 40 digs against Miss. St., establishing a 4-set match record (breaking her own mark of 30).
In ULM's 3-1 victory over Jackson State on Friday, Araya came through with 20 digs and a service ace in win. She currently leads the SBC with 90 digs on the season.
