State Treasurer Up To His Old Tricks Again

JUNE 15, 2004 - Posted at 7:36 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - State Treasurer Gus Wingfield has put a distant relative on the staff of his office for the summer months, adding him to a list that already includes two of Wingfield's daughters.

Austin Wingfield of North Little Rock is a student at Arkansas State University.  He was hired May 24 as a treasury assistant at an hourly rate of $6.25.

It's the second summer for the younger Wingfield to serve in the treasurer's office.  Last year he made $2,700 working in the same position for the same pay from June 2 through August 15.

Treasurer's office chief deputy Dan Honey says there is nothing wrong in hiring the student.  He says the younger Wingfield runs errands and does some heavy lifting in the office.

In February, Wingfield was reprimanded and fined $750 by the state Ethics Commission for promoting and granting large pay increases to his two daughters last July.
