Police, fire departments raise money to honor fallen comrades

CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KAIT) – The Caruthersville Fire and Police Departments cooked out for a cause Saturday morning.

The Departments are raising money for memorial plaques that hang inside the city's Public Safety Center in honor of an officer and firefighter who died in the lines of duty.

Officer Evan Burns died August 2011 when a man driving a stolen SUV crashed into his patrol car.

Firefighter Randall McDonald died battling a fire in 1991.

Fire captain Richard Lee said the goal is to raise about $8,000 for the plaques.  The Departments expect to raise about half of the goal from the benefit barbecue.

People picked up their pre-ordered barbecue ribs, pork butts, and chicken from the Public Safety Center where officers and firefighters cooked and packaged the meat Saturday morning.

"We always have great support with the community of Caruthersville and the surrounding area, and we just appreciate everyone that's helped out with it," said Captain Lee.
