From Arkansas State University

The Arkansas State women's cross country finished second and the Red Wolves men placed ninth at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic Saturday in the 2012 cross country season opener.

The event was delayed several times due to lightning strikes in the Memphis area and the event kicked off slightly before midnight or Saturday night.

Three ASU women's runners finished among the top 11 out of 185 runners in the field, helping the Red Wolves score 46 points on the night. Eastern Kentucky scored 31 points and won the 21-team event.

Arkansas State's men finished with 260 points on the night to place eighth among 21 teams while Eastern Kentucky won the team competition with 18 points.

Sophomore Kristina Aubert led the ASU women with a second-place finish, clocking in at 18:24.27 and just ahead of senior Sam Salinas, who finished fifth at 18:50.93. Freshman Abbey Dixon ran a time of 19:08.12 to finish 11th.

Sophomore Luke Lindsley paced the Red Wolves men with 30th place finish, running the course in 21:54.59, while senior David Mills ran a 22:26.88 to place 52nd out of 208 runners.

The A-State cross country teams will return to action Sept. 7 at the UALR Invitational.
