From Williams Baptist College
A mixture of experience and young talent has led to a blistering start for the Williams Baptist College volleyball squad. In their first week of the 2012 campaign, they won all seven matches played, losing a mere two sets in those contests.
The team is not resting on its laurels. "The girls are happy with our record but are driven to improve because the start of American Midwest Conference season and highly ranked competitors is just around the corner," said Head Coach Eric Newell.
The attack for the Lady Eagles is led by a quartet of athletes. Sophomore Jameea Ward leads the team with 46 kills, followed closely by freshman Harley Strayhorn with 45, senior Katie Thomas with 44 and freshman Kaillie Ralston 42.
Five Eagles lead the way on the defensive end. Freshman Taylor Booth has amassed 41 digs, senior Courtney Melvin has 36, Ralston has 32, senior Codie Lancaster has 29 and sophomore Shelby Upshaw has notched 28.
Junior Makenna Wiedower leads the team in assists with 107, followed by Lancaster with 74. The two are the primary setters for the Lady Eagles.
Williams will jump back onto the court to compete in a tri-match at Lyon College in Batesville, Ark., on Saturday, September 8. The Lady Eagles will play two matches, the first at 11 a.m. against Lyon in their first AMC match of the season. Following that match, the WBC will play Philander Smith College.
