Newport Man Found Guilty on Murder Charges

JUNE 16, 2004 - Posted at 2:05 p.m. CDT

NEWPORT, AR - A jury in Jackson County has returned a guilty verdict in the trial of a man accused in the stabbing death of his stepfather.

40-year-old Michael Myers was found guilty today of first degree murder for the death last October of 66-year-old Gene West.

The sentencing phase of the trial is to be held this afternoon.  Myers faces a sentence of ten to forty years or life in prison.

Prosecutors say Myers stabbed West during an argument in which West had told Myers to move out of West's house.  Myers claimed self-defense but acknowledged that he'd been drinking and taking tranquilizers the night of the killing.
