Batesville prepares to honor 9/11 victim Sara Low

BATESVILLE, AR (KAIT) – Residents in Batesville will honor a 9/11 victim this weekend with a memorial 5K run and walk.

The Sara Low Memorial 5K Run and Walk will take place this Saturday starting at 8 a.m. at Batesville High School on Pioneer Road.

Low, a Batesville native, was a flight attendant on American Airlines flight 11, which was the first plane to crash into the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

Low was 28-years-old at the time of her death.

Six years ago, one of Low's friends decided to create a race in her honor, and interest has grown ever since.

Kenneth McSpadden became co-director of the race, though he never knew Low.

"I love this country, and this just wasn't right," McSpadden said. "It's our hometown. It's like our daughter. It's something that (we) felt that we needed to do."

He encourages anyone to participate in the race because it's not too late to sign up.

Registration begins at 6:30 Saturday morning.

All proceeds will benefit the Sara Low Memorial 5K Scholarship, which is awarded each year to one Batesville High School student.
