HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AStateRedWolves.com) – Four members of the Arkansas State men's golf team recorded a personal-best round at the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate, where the Red Wolves concluded play Tuesday in 13th place with a combined three-round total of 878.
A-State posted a final-round 294 at the Hattiesburg Country Club today, dropping one place in the final standings after ending the tournament's first and second rounds Monday with a 291 and 293, respectively. ASU's 878 total was its best since posting the same score at the Red Wolf Intercollegiate last season, a span of three tournaments.
"We were playing well all three rounds, but just let it get away from us and didn't finish the way we need to," said ASU head coach Steve Johnson. "We have a young team for the most part that doesn't have a lot of playing experience, so in that regard I thought they played well. I saw some things we can definitely build on this season, so we'll get back and go to work to prepare for the Vanderbilt tournament."
ASU finished just three strokes behind 12th-place Louisiana-Monroe and within six strokes of 11th-place UT San Antonio. Ole Miss led the 15-team field with an 845, while Mississippi State finished runner-up with an 846.
The Red Wolves were led by junior Easton Key, who turned in a 5-over par 878. Key, who shot a 72-72-73, posted a team-high 10 birdies during the tournament. Following Key for the Red Wolves was sophomore Alex Hewitt, who finished tied for 43rd place with a career-best 220. He carded a 1-under par 70 for the second 18 holes that gave him the lowest single-round score of his career as well. Hewitt was also responsible for ASU's only eagle during the tournament, and he aced the No. 2 hole during the second round with a 5 iron.
Matt Howton, ASU's lone senior competing in the tournament, posted a 223 (74-75-74) to finish tied for 55th place. Sophomore Christian Helmbold's best round, a career-low 71 that gave him a 225 total and placed him tied for 64th place along with teammate Chance Holden, came on the final day of play. Holden's 225, which included a career-best 71 for the first round, was his lowest personal score at A-State.
Sophomore Sean Brock competed as an individual and finished tied for 76th place, but posted the lowest single-round score of the tournament by an ASU player. Brock recorded a 2-under 69 for the final 18 holes today, which was 13 strokes under his first-round score and gave him a career-best 230 for all three rounds.
ASU returns to action Sept. 21-23 at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate, hosted by Vanderbilt and set to be played at the Legends Club in Nashville, Tenn.
