GRAMBLING La. (AStateRedWolves.com) – The Arkansas State soccer team defeated Grambling State 6-2 in its final non-conference match on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Wolves pulled away in the second halfthanks to four goals from different players in the final 45 minutes.
"The strong second half effort by our girls turned things in our favor," ASU soccer coach Tafadzwa Ziyenege said. "This is a very young team holding their own pretty well thus far in the season."
The Red Wolves held a 2-1 advantage at halftime thanks to goals from Loren Mitchell and Christine Giles in the first half. Mitchell scored in the 19th minute on an assist from Jena' Kelley and Giles added an unassisted goal in the 25th minute.
In the second half Christina Fink scored in the 50th minute on an assist from Mitchell to push the lead to 3-1, but the Tigers scored quickly to close the gap to 3-2.
Katey Carmichael scored in the 67th minute on an assist from Ashley McMurtry to give A-State a two goal advantage, while Madison Joyce made the score 5-2 when she scored an unassisted goal.
Mitchell added her second goal of the day on the 72nd minute on an assist from Fink to set the final at 6-2.
The ASU soccer team will open Sun Belt Conference play Friday, Sept. 21 at Western Kentucky. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
