ASU women's golf 3rd after first day of Drake Creek Invitational

Ledbetter, Ky. ( – The Arkansas State women's golf team opened its 2012-13 season Monday at the Drake Creek Invitational, finishing the tournament's first two rounds at the Drake Creek Golf Club tied for third place with a combined 601.

The Red Wolves, just two strokes behind leader Central Arkansas, were led by three players finishing the day among the top 17 individual leaders.  A-State recorded a 300 and 301 for the first and second rounds, respectively, to end the day tied with Belmont.  Tournament-host Murray State is currently second with a 600.

ASU's Anna Carling and Jennifer Loiacano are both within no more than three strokes of current leader Shay Sullivan of Belmont.  Carling is in second place with an overall score only one stroke over par.  She carded a 72 for the opening 18 holes and followed with a second-round 73 for a combined 145.

Loiacano is tied for fourth place with a 147, which included a 1-under par 71 and a 76.  Her first-round total was the lowest single-round score of the day by an A-State player.

Joining Carling and Loiacano among the top-20 leaders was Abi Laker, who is tied for 17th place with a combined 152.  Laker opened tournament play with a 79 before coming back to shoot a 73 for the second round.

Also competing for ASU, Courtney Manning is in 29th place with a 157 (78-79), Clara Tefteller in 45th with a 163 (82-81) and Anna Flanrey tied for 46th with a 164 (82-82).  Flanrey is competing as an individual.

The Drake Creek Invitational's final round will be played Tuesday.
