COPY-20-year sentence for man who shot officer

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A St. Louis man who shot a police officer has been sentenced to more nearly 20 years in federal prison.

Vernon Collins pleaded guilty in May to one felony count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm. He was sentenced in U.S. District Court on Tuesday.

The shooting happened in March 2001 after the officer was called to a disturbance. Collins ran from the home and the officer caught him. They struggled and Collins was able to grab the officer's gun and fire one shot.

The officer suffered a graze wound to the stomach and leg. He was treated at a hospital and released.

Collins was captured a few minutes later.
