UNDATED (KAIT) – Ahoy, from the depths of the Region 8 News room! September 19 be markin' International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Every year on September 19, people are encouraged to talk like pirates and unleash their inner buccaneer. Why? Because it's fun.

Originally started in Albany, OR by two friends, John "Ol' Chumbucket" Baur and Mark "Cap'n Slappy" Summers, the holiday is celebrated by millions of people on all seven continents including the South Pole and the International Space Station, said a spokesperson for the The Pirate Guys, LLC.

The spokesperson said the holiday began when the two were playing racquetball together, and for reasons unclear to them, they began insulting each other though pirate speak.

They chose September 19—Summer's ex-wife's birthday—because "the date was stuck in [his] head and [he] wasn't doing anything with it anymore, so it would be easy to remember," said Summers.

You can visit the Talk Like a Pirate website to learn what the holiday is all about.
