Shaw's record-setting performance earns SEC honors

Connor Shaw Connor Shaw

University of South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw has been named co-offensive player of the week by the Southeastern Conference after his record-setting performance led the No. 6 Gamecocks to a 31-10 win over Missouri.

Shaw threw for 249 yards and two touchdowns and completed a school-record 20 consecutive passes to finish the game.

He shared the offensive honor with Arkansas' Cobi Hamilton who amassed 303 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 10 catches against Rutgers, an SEC record.

Shaw's 20 straight completions are tied for the second most in SEC history with Ole Miss' Kent Austin, who had 20 straight against Tennessee in 1982. His completion percentage of 95.2 is also a school record and ranks second in SEC history.

"I have a lot of guys around me that made those plays happen," said Shaw after the win. "There's a lot of positive vibe in the locker room."

The 6'1" 207 lb. junior likely silenced those critics who had questioned Steve Spurrier's decision to start him Saturday after a shoulder injury forced him out of two of the first three games of the season. He sat out the other game.

"Connor, of course, 20 of 21, got off to a slow start. He missed his first one I think," said a chuckling Spurrier Saturday night. "He was sensational."

The conference also named Ace Sanders co-special teams player of the week.

Sanders' six punt returns for 106 yards including a 49-yard return in South Carolina's 31-10 win over Missouri.  The 49-yard return set up the Gamecocks' first score of the game.  The junior also had a 23-yard TD scoring catch in the game.

South Carolina will return to action next Saturday in a SEC matchup against Kentucky in Lexington, Ky. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Commonwealth Stadium. The game will be televised on either ESPN or ESPN2.

A presser hasn't gone by without LSU Head Coach Ed Orgeron talking up true freshman Myles Brennan. The St. Stanislaus alum is turning heads with his rocket arm, and accuracy with wide receivers. Offensive coordinator Matt Canada also is a big fan of Brennan, and thinks things will only get better for the backup as the 2017 season progresses. "Myles has gotten better every week.
