LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - While it's still harvest time for many crops in Arkansas - some growers are planting their winter wheat.
The growers who have planted winter wheat so far are ahead of the recommended planting times for the crop in Arkansas.
The earlier winter wheat is planted, the greater the risk that the plants will be attacked by pests
The University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture says armyworms are in high numbers across the state.
Agriculture officials say they've gotten calls about wheat in pastures and wildlife food plots that have suddenly disappeared due to the pests. Other threats to winter wheat are the Hessian Fly and barley yellow dwarf virus, which is transmitted by aphids.
Crops being harvested in Arkansas are corn, cotton rice, sorghum and soybeans.
