Senior Wessel Zwiegers completed the first 36 holes of competition Sunday at the Cobra-PUMA Invitational tied for 17th place with a 1-under par 143, leading the Arkansas State men's golf team that stands tied for 12th place after recording a combined 596 on the Miromar Lakes golf course.
The Red Wolves completed the two-day tournament's opening round in 13th place with a 299, but trimmed two strokes off that total in the second to climb one place in the standings. A-State is five strokes behind 11th-place Loyola University-Maryland and within eight strokes of Georgetown, which sits in 10th place.
Florida Gulf Coast leads the 15-team field with a 558, while Penn State recorded a 570 to end the day in second place.
Zwiegers, competing in his first tournament this season, posted a 70 this afternoon to turn in the best single-round score by an ASU player on the day. Zwiegers is tied for eighth in par-4 scoring and made 25 pars over the course of the day to rank tied for seventh. He is is only one stroke out of 12th place and within five strokes of three players tied for fourth.
After picking up the top finish for the Red Wolves in each of their first two tournaments, junior Easton Key is tied for 31st place with a combined 147. Key shot an opening round 75 and followed it up with a 72 in the afternoon.
Senior Matt Howton, who was responsible for ASU's only eagle on the day, is tied for 52nd place with a combined 151. Howton carded a season-best 73 during the morning round, but tacked eight strokes onto that total in the second to drop him 23 places in the standings.
Also competing for A-State, Sean Brock is tied for 61st place with a 155 (78-77) and Alex Hewitt is in 78th with a 161 (81-80).
The tournament's third and final round will be played Monday.
