IZARD COUNTY, AR (KAIT)- One man is arrested and authorities are still searching for another after a traffic stop over the weekend.
Around 2 a.m. Saturday, Deputy Phil Story arrested the driver, Lincoln Dwain Fulbright, after he failed to stop. Deputies chased Fulbright into the Reeves Cemetery until Fulbright's vehicle couldn't go any further.
The passenger, Mervin Sanders, escaped.
Sanders escaped the scene on foot following the traffic stop and ran into the nearby woods. Other officers arrived to help find Sanders. Fulbright had initially told authorities that he had picked up the passenger and didn't know his name.
Sanders's dog was left while police were "fairly certain" the dog would be reunited with the fleeing suspect. Later Saturday morning, a Melbourne business told the sheriff's office a suspicious individual with a dog was at their building. Deputy Story arrived but the man and the dog fled the scene.
In the process, according to the Izard County Sheriff's Office, police determined the fleeing man was the suspect who fled the site of the traffic stop.
Sanders was ultimately able to avoid capture. During the search, Fulbright admitted he had known the real identity of his passenger but had not given correct information to officials at Reeves Cemetery.
Mervin Sanders faces charges including two counts of fleeing. Fulbright is facing charges including obstructing governmental operations. Fulbright posted bond on his original charges yesterday and was then issued a court date.
