The Arkansas State men's golf team turned in its best score at the Cobra-PUMA Invitational on Tuesday, shooting a final-round 296 to give the Red Wolves a combined 892 and place them 14th among 15 competing teams.
The Red Wolves opened the tournament with an opening-round 299 before trimming two strokes off that total in the second round, ending Monday's competition tied for 12th place. ASU dropped two places in the standings despite posting their best round today, finishing one stroke behind Xavier.
Coming back from injury, Wessel Zwiegers made a strong debut to his senior campaign at the tournament by picking up the best finish of his career. Zwiegers claimed 24th place to lead the Red Wolves, recording a combined 218 for the lowest three-round score of his career. He made 37 pars over the course of the tournament to tie for the fifth most among all players.
"It was nice to have Wessel back in the lineup, and that obviously helped our score some," said ASU head coach Steve Johnson. "Matt (Howton) also had a solid round today, and now we just to have some of our younger guys continue to progress and turn it up a notch."
Howton narrowly missed a top-25 finish as well, shooting a career-best 220 to tie for 28th place. The senior carded a final-round 69, which was the lowest single-round score of his career as well.
Also competing for A-State, Easton Key finished tied for 47th place with a 224, Sean Brock tied for 70th with a 233 and Alex Hewitt 75th with a 236.
Florida Gulf Coast secured the tournament championship with an 837, while Penn State finished second with an 856 and Bethune-Cookman third with an 857.
The Red Wolves return to action Oct. 15-16 at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate in Overland Park, Kan.
