One Region 8 Church Celebrates 100 Years of History

June 27, 2004--Posted at 6:00 p.m. CDT

JONESBORO--"We have a history and legacy in this community,"said First Baptist Church Member Linda Jackson.

A history indeed, 100 years. The First Baptist Church in Jonesboro was built in 1904.

It is one of the oldest churches in Jonesboro on it's original foundation.
The congregation filled the sanctuary this morning reminiscing about the church.

"It's not the same church that was built in 1904. It has come together,"said church member Billie Hill.

"I have seen children grow up. I have seen older people leave. I seen people go and come back, and people never come back,"said church member Leveda Thomas.

Thomas has been a member of the First Baptist family for nearly 60 years.

"When I was young, I belonged to another church, but it seemed like the youngsters were having more fun over here, so I came over here at an early age, and have been here every since,"said Thomas.

The church was first built in 1904, then went through extensive renovations nearly 70 years later.

New carpet, a new roof, and more seating are among some of the maintenance additions, but most members say it's been the love and devotion of the members that has really made the church a solid structure.

Church members say they hope First Baptist keeps going strong for the next 100 years.

"I hope that we just continue to glorify God, and witness to the world, and be the light at the end of the tunnel,"said Jackson.

"It's my whole family life is what this church is to me,"said Hill.
