JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)- Schools from around the world and even a few here in Region 8 celebrated National Walk to School Day today.

The event began this morning at the Southwest Church of Christ parking lot with students and parents raising awareness about the benefits of walking to school. There was even dancing as walkers arrived from all over Jonesboro.

Jonesboro Mayor Harold Perrin says, "This is the future of our city and every year, I look forward to this. Walking up to the school, visiting with the teachers and students. Its just incredible. And it's a great day to do it!"

Walk to School Day raises awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling. Events like these also emphasize the importance of issues like increasing pedestrian safety and the environment.

Walk to School Day is International too, celebrated in 40 countries.
